Information

About The Manchester Metropolitan University

Manchester Metropolitan University's (MMU) main campus, All Saints, is located in Manchester city centre. There are three further campuses just outside the city - Elizabeth Gaskell, Hollings and Didsbury which are all linked by excellent bus services from the city centre. There are also two campuses in Cheshire Crewe and Alsager.

Background and History

In its current form, MMU's most concrete formation date is 1970, when Manchester Polytechnic was founded. It was granted university status in 1992 and renamed Manchester Metropolitan University. However, the University's roots go back as far as 1824.

Location and Accessibility

By rail: When you get to Manchester Piccadilly, get a further train to Manchester Oxford Road (this service runs very regularly and the journey only lasts a couple of minutes) and you will be there. There is also a regular bus service from Piccadilly to Oxford Road (bus numbers 41, 42, 43, 85, 111, 250 and 256) (get off at the BBC stop).

By road: MMU is easily linked to the M56, M60 and M602. There is multi-storey car parking available around the All Saints campus.

Ease of access for disabled students: Most buildings and facilities are wheelchair friendly, and accommodation designed for people with disabilities is available. For further information, call 0161 275 0990 or email [email protected]

Accommodation at The Manchester Metropolitan University

University Accommodation

Incoming students have a choice of seven halls of residence across Manchester and four across the Cheshire campus. There is a choice between catered/self-catered and en suite/shared bathroom.

Private Accommodation

Alternatively, you may prefer a flat/house share if you don't fancy University accommodation. The most popular areas for house shares are Fallowfield and Hulme, although there is a massive choice of areas to live in. With this choice comes a huge variety of rent prices, so make sure you thoroughly shop around for the best deal.

Courses & Fees

Faculties and Departments

MMU is split into eight different faculties: the Faculty of Art Design, the Faculty of Health, Psychology Social Care, the Hollings Faculty, the Faculty of Humanities, Law Social Science, the Institute of Education and MMU Business School, MMU Cheshire and the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Academic Strengths and Research Profile

MMU is one of the leading new universities in terms of its research profile. It has eight research institutes, including: Dalton Research Institute (DRI), Education and Social Research Institute (ESRI), Healthcare Science Research Institute (HSRI), Institute of Humanities and Social Science Research (HSSR), Institute for Performance Research (IPR), Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design (MIRIAD), Research Institute for Business and Management (RIBM), Research Institute for Health and Social Change (RIHSC).

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees vary depending on the course of study chosen and whether you wish to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level. Fees for overseas students are also likely to be higher than those for UK/EU students. For a full list of fees it is advisable to contact the university directly or visit their website.

Financial Support

Bursaries are available, based on household income. The system is linked to Student Finance England, meaning you don't have to apply for a bursary as your household income details (given as part of your student finance application) will be passed on to the University, who will then work out whether you are entitled to a bursary or not.

Facilities at The Manchester Metropolitan University

Academic Facilities

Each campus has its very own library facilities, with access to computers, electronic resources and study areas. Opening times vary.

Other On-Site Amenities

The MMU student union, on Oxford Road, is the hub of campus activity. There are a huge range of societies on offer from Shaolin Kung Fu to the Genesis Theatre so it is the perfect chance to try something new. The main student night is on Wednesdays and there are 16 sports halls across the whole University.

Medical and Social Care

New students are required to register with a doctor on arrival, something which is guided by the University. Meanwhile, chaplaincies for every faith are available across the city.

What's on in the Area

Not much needs to be said here, because everything is going on. Quite simply, Manchester is one of the world's most exciting cities and has a vibrant arts and social scene, as well as a thriving gay district.

Moving On

The University runs an extensive careers service which aims to improve the employability of its students, past and present. There is a strong focus on delivering skills and knowledge, whilst also providing a variety of courses, services, events and opportunities for part-time work.

Is Manchester Metropolitan University the place for you?

Come to Manchester Metropolitan University if you want to combine living in one of the world's most exciting cities with working hard on your degree. MMU is not the most prestigious, as demonstrated by its league position, so make sure you get the most out of your course. If you are looking for a university that has an equally up-and-coming research profile, but don't fancy the vast campus and prefer somewhere more compact, try the University of Huddersfield or Bournemouth.
