About University of Cumbria

Address and Location

Whether your tastes run to town or country, Cumbria University has a campus to suit both. The institution is split across four sites in Lancaster, Carlisle and Penrith, with additional facilities in Ambleside, Workington and Tower Hamlets.

Background and History

Despite only being founded in August 2007, the University of Cumbria can trace its roots back to 1832. Formed through the merger of St Martin's College, Cumbria Institute of the Arts and the Penrith campus of the University of Central Lancashire, Cumbria University draws on a long history of excellence in teacher and health professional training, art, and agricultural research.

Location and Accessibility

Lancaster Campus

By Road: Those travelling from the north should exit the M6 at Junction 34, following the signs for Lancaster city centre. Visitors from the south should leave the M6 at Junction 33.

By Rail: Lancaster is on the main West Coast line, the university campus in the town is 20 minutes from the station.

Carlisle Campus

By Road: Visitors from north or south should exit the M6 at either Junction 43 or 44 depending on which of the two sites they require.

By Rail: Both Carlisle campuses are only a short distance from the station, sitting as it does on the London to Glasgow West Coast line.

Penrith Campus

By Road: Exit the M6 at Junction 40, then follow the signs to the university campus.

By Rail: As well as being on the main West Coast line, Penrith is also easily accessible from Carlisle. The campus is a short taxi-ride from the station.

Accessibility: Most university facilities are wheelchair-accessible and the Learning, Information and Student Services team (LISS) provides extensive help to students with disabilities or dyslexia. Students can discuss their needs with the team at any point before or during their studies.

Courses & Fees

Academic Strengths and Research Profile

The university's parent institutions have a history of excellence in education and healthcare training. Cumbria University is also home to the National School of Forestry - outdoor courses at the institution are very highly regarded.

Tuition Fees

In 2014, undergraduate courses cost £9,000 per year. Fees for international students and postgraduates vary.

Accessibility: A variety of scholarships and means-tested bursaries are available to undergraduates and postgraduates. Check the university website for more details.

Facilities at University of Cumbria

Academic Facilities

Students are free to use facilities at any of the university campuses, which include state-of-the-art medical laboratories and industry-standard digital film production suites. Performing Arts students benefit from the use of three modern theatres at the university.

Other on-site Amenities

There are ample sporting facilities on the Lancaster, Carlisle and Penrith campuses, including a dedicated climbing centre at the latter. More than 30 active university societies mean there is no shortage of activities for students to get involved in. Each campus is home to a range of eating, drinking and shopping facilities.

Medical and Social Care

While there are no on-site GP practices, several of the campuses have clinics nearby. Each campus has its own chaplain and the university provides a dedicated counselling service. Both the Penrith and Lancaster sites offer childcare services for the children of staff and students.

What's on in the Area

Students at the University of Cumbria have the best of two worlds. The historic city of Lancaster teems with culture and offers an exciting place to live and study. Carlisle has museums, galleries and a thriving music scene. With the beautiful Cumbria Fells on the university's doorstep, students can also easily escape to the Lake District during the weekend.

Moving On

The university has a dedicated careers office which covers all aspects of employment. The department is also particularly well-connected to the healthcare industry. In addition to conducting workshops and providing CV advice, the careers office also organises a mentor service for first-year students.

Did you know?

Cumbria is one of the newest universities in Britain. The Lancaster campus was originally a barracks for the King's Royal Regiment, while the Carlisle campus started life as a workhouse, then became a military hospital. In it's short history, the university has already produced a Turner Prize winner, Keith Tyson.

Is Cumbria University the place for you?

For a well-respected degree in an outdoor subject, the University of Cumbria couldn't be better placed. Students also have the bustle of two cities on their doorstep. Some students may prefer a more traditional university experience, however, and Aberdeen and Newcastle both offer interesting alternatives.
